Field News

I wish that I had all the juicy gossip about a titilating escapade at the field lately, but suffice it to say that a local chiropracter who flies spicy planes and an ex Navy (probably I'm wrong on the service) boat person who also likes PBYs and assorted fighters got into it at the field.  Seems as though No. 1 was flying and had a premature landing.  Another had not taken the pin.  Back to the first, he got what was left of his plane and his radio and went back to his flight station.  Back to No.2, he was landing and had a wing over (loss of control).  The bottom line was that both had been on the same channel and No. 1 went back to his flight station with the antenna down but the radio still on.  There's more so stay tuned.

Here is a hum dinger of a swap meet that was passed on to me.  Please check location before you go.  The website for further information is given towards the bottom of this information.

Minutes of February Meeting

Springfield RC Club, minutes of February meeting, Thursday, February 5, 2004.  Ralph Todd, Secretary.

The club met at the Library Center on south Campbell street.  The meeting was called to order at 7 PM by president Dan Curtis. The attendance was down some due to snow and ice.  Copies of the minutes of last month's meeting were passed around for review.  These were approved, as written, by the club.  The treasure, Kevin Murdock, passed around his report, detailing the interest collected on the club's CD's , income from new members paid, the rent paid to the owner of our field, etc.  This was voted on and passed.

Doug Bennett introduced and welcomed Dallas Porter, back to the club again.  Dallas has been in the club for many years prior to this recent absence.  He told how he had made the clip board system that we still use to identify which channels are being used while flying.

Old Business:

Doug Bennett, as chairman of the BI-laws update committee, reported that the survey of practical and legal aspects of the club's constitution are still being studied.  He will have more information next meeting.

Dan reported that the GPS and farm road address for the 911 emergency listing is getting closer to being established

New Business:

Charlie Newton said that after having the Top Gun Trophy for several years, he didn't feel right keeping it again all year, but suggested we pass it on to someone else for the remainder of this year.  The club chose to vote on the most deserving member to give it to, during our next meeting.

Dan Curtis offered some information about another brand of fuel that is very economical, and is popular with several midwest clubs.  The name of it is Magnum, and it is very competitive.

Dan asked the the club if we would have any ideas on what we could do to improve our flying site.  There were several suggestions, some of which were:   A better fiberglass Port-O-Potty,  a long concrete pad for pilots to get their planes ready on,  better platforms to hold the planes while servicing, doubling the size of our present building, and enlarging the runway were some of the thoughts that were given..  These prospects for improvement are to be studied between now and next meeting.

Harold Carroll brought up the subject about radio interference while flying at the field.  He has experienced some "hits" while flying on Ch 20.  He said it has happened frequently.  It was recommended that he try a different channel if the problem persist, and that we all pay attention as to which direction, elevation, time, etc. that any interference occurs.

A motion was made and seconded to adjourn.  This was voted on and passed, about 8:20 PM

HOW CAN WE HELP?
About the National Newsletter

By SARAH GREINER

How can the National Newsletter help you as a club newsletter editor? Let me explain how the production of this newsletter works.

First, AMA receives copies of club newsletters from all over the United States. As editor of the NNL, I read each of these newsletters to decide if any of the articles could be used in the NNL. After we have reviewed the articles to make sure they haven’t been previously published in the NNL, they are E-mailed to our technical editor, Ed McCullough, who checks each article for technical problems. Once the article passes Ed’s inspection, it is sent back to me to include in upcoming issues of the newsletter.

The NNL is provided as a service to club newsletter editors. The articles are available for your use (with proper attribution). We encourage you to share NNL articles with your fellow club members through publication in your club newsletter. In return, we hope you encourage your club members to write articles that are insightful and useful to modelers across the country. As you can see, we don’t just publish technical, how-to articles. We also like to include articles about interesting contests, universal club issues, and safety at the flying field. Overall, we want to publish articles that give our members helpful hints and more knowledge and understanding than before.

I encourage each of you to contact me with ideas or suggestions for the National Newsletter. After all, its main purpose is to serve the interests of our members. Although the AMA staff does not write the stories, I will do my best to scour the club newsletters for articles you want to read, so give me your input.

To help club newsletter editors, past issues of the NNL are available on the AMA Web site, www.modelaircraft.org. Go to Publications, then click on National Newsletters. You have access to all newsletters published since January 1997.

If you have questions regarding the National Newsletter, write to Sarah Greiner, National Newsletter editor, 5161 E. Memorial Dr., Muncie IN 47302; call (765) 287-1256, ext. 228; or E-mail sarahg@modelaircraft.org.

Ed McCullough
Technical Editor

Ed flew his first Free Flight model more than 50 years ago. His first Control Line flight followed shortly, and he flew his first Radio Control airplane nearly 30 years ago. Ed saw his first model in 1941 when his father started a Cleveland kit of the B-25.

Ed received his bachelor’s degree from Rocky Mountain College in 1956 and his master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965. He spent most of his working life teaching chemistry and physics (with some math, physical science, earth science and computer classes) to high school students. Along the way, he was one of the authors of a science program for high schools, which was recognized as one of the best in the world, he worked in forensics, and wrote a magazine column for 18 years.
