Field News
The Float Fly for this year is history. It was well attended in spite of the heat. The boat crews were active and the kitchen crew needed every bit of ice and coolness available. Our club members were very apparent and working. There were a lot of new fliers from around this area. Below are some scenes from the event. Larger images can be seen by clicking on the thumbnail. More information as to winners, both flight and raffle will be in the next newsletter. Crashes were limited due to the skill of the fliers this year. There were a lot of kids and family members making this our biggest family event of the year so far.

Minutes
of August meeting:
Springfield
Mo. RC Club, minutes of August meeting, August 7, 2003. Ralph Todd,
Secretary.
The club met at the Library on South Campbell street. The meeting was
called to order at 7 PM by President Dan Curtis. Copies of the July
meeting were passed around for review, for anyone not seeing it in our
newsletter. They were approved. A detailed treasurer's report was
given by treasurer Kevin Murdock. Dues were paid by four new members,
bringing our total membership to 79. Kevin passed out some new membership
rosters. The report was approved as read.
OLD BUSINESS;
President Dan called on Sparky Wessels for a report on the up coming float
fly. He announced that the float practice at Lake Springfield, had been
moved to August 10th, due to being rained out the previous week. He said
that Doug Bennett had offered to cook and Charlie Newton would be there with his
boat for pick up. Jim Robertson, Charlie Newton, and Ron Hyde,
volunteered to help set up the area at the Lake, which included erecting 2 large
tents. Sparky said that suppliers had donated several hundred dollars
worth of prizes to be raffled off. These included a complete radio set up,
and a new, fully built Seamaster airplane. Dan offered to fill out necessary AMA
papers, and to have the necessary entry forms ready. Sparky requested that we
keep spectators back away from the flight line at the edge of the Lake, and that
he would supply a plastic fence and signs.
NEW BUSINESS:
The AMA sanctioned pattern contest is coming up September 8th & 9th.
The president asked for volunteers for scribing and other paper work - also for
helping with the food service etc. Plans are coming along and it appears
that we will have at least as many entries as last year. Dan said that 30
or so is about as many as we could handle in a day. We are naturally
hoping for good weather.
The Helicopter contest will be on October 11th & 12th. The entry fee
will be $20, which is less than some clubs charge. Jon White
reported that entries and coming in, and we do need members to help out.
After some discussion, Jon made a motion that the club spend up to $600 to
purchase a Raptor 50 helicopter and motor for raffle during this event.
The tickets will sell for $1 each, 7 for $5, or a long string
of tickets for $25. There are over 30 contestants expected. Lunch
will be included in the entry fee for the pilots.
(Editor's note: There will be a modest charge for lunch for club members and
guests. Several club members will serve as master chefs, their epicurean
talents are well known throughout this area!!)
Field report - O. D. Fine reported that the tarmac needs a coat of sealer to
preserve it . The club recommended that O. D. check with a sealer for a bid for
doing the job. He also said that the perimeter of the field needs
mowing. Jerry Kutz said he would help in trying to get someone to mow.
The club agreed that Mike Howard is doing a good job keeping the field mowed.
President Dan said that a committee needs to be set up next month for selecting
nominations for new officers.
A motion was made and seconded that we adjourn about 8:05 PM. The club
enjoyed visiting, and a raffle held by Bob Pace afterwards.

Emergency patching
Sometimes a taxi mistake or a soft landing results in minor damage, such as a
hole poked in the wing covering material. Your aircraft is flyable except for
that hole. To handle this problem, carry some denatured alcohol in a small,
plastic container and a roll of scotch tape. Using a paper towel, clean the
patch area with the alcohol to get rid of all oil. The oil film will keep the
tape from sticking. Clean the area twice. Wait a couple minutes and apply the
scotch tape to seal the hole. I have an old Ugly Stik that I use to break in
2-cycle engines, and it has several scotch tape patches that have held up for
years. Caution: Don’t use regular rubbing alcohol as it has some oil in it
that will leave enough film to prevent the tape from sticking properly.

Newsletter Editor's Note: The latter is an excellent point. Frankly, I have often wondered why the tape and paper doesn't stick well, after I used rubbing alcohol. From now on I have another use for Old Taylor, ha.
